Indoor Plants

In the modern concept and practice of indoor gardening, the scope of growing plants has been extended to many areas in and around the house including balcony and verandah, terraces and patios and almost all types of plants are being used depending on the environment, particularly light and temperature.

With the increasing population in cities and towns, houses with garden space are becoming limited. To add beauty to a house and to get immense pleasure and fun, a city-dweller can grow a wide range of flowering and foliage plants in every corner of his house. In recent years, there is an increasing interest in indoor plants which can be very effectively used in interior decoration. A bit of natural greenery helps in breaking or softening the harsh lines of modern office buildings or apartment buildings.

Plants are considered very important in modern interior designs. They make the home environment closer to nature. In decorating indoors with plants a definite scheme is to be followed. Mere placing of some plants here and there is not enough.

Indoor plants impose a wide variety of demands on light, temperature, air-humidity, soil, nutrition and water. Pots can be specially chosen to suit individual plant. Plastic, non-porous pots are ideal for plants which flourish in moist compost. Watering is needed less frequenty in plastic pots than in clay pots. New clay pots should be soaked in water for several hours before use. Know more >>>

Plants suitable for window boxes are species and varieties of Aglaonema, Caladium, Calathea, Dieffenbachia and Peperomia, varieties of Coleus blumei and Impatients walleriana etc.

Many elegant and hardy Palms are ideal house plants. Some species recommended for growing indoors include Areca triandra, Chamaedorea erumpens etc.
